What Cognitive Disorders Do We Support?

Cognition refers to mental functioning, which relates to the learning and understanding of information, emotions, and experiences. Cognitive disorders lead to difficulties with the components of mental functioning and may cause changes in mental state, including mood and behavior.

In addition to Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, several other types of cognitive disorders may lead to debilitating impairments:

  • Traumatic brain injuries: These injuries involve a sudden force to the head or skull, such as a blow, bump, or jolt. They can have a range of short- and long-term effects on the brain, potentially changing how a person thinks, feels, acts, or moves.
  • Bipolar disorder: This cognitive disorder causes extreme mood swings, affecting energy, activity levels, and concentration. These mood swings can make it hard to complete daily tasks, resulting in the need for additional support.
  • Schizophrenia: This condition affects a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. People with schizophrenia may have trouble concentrating and with memory or experience distorted perceptions of reality, among other symptoms.

Different circumstances or risk factors might lead to a person developing a cognitive disorder, including:

  • Age: Increasing age is often the biggest risk factor for developing cognitive disorders.
  • Family history: A person with a close relative living with a cognitive disorder is more likely to develop one than a person without a family history of the disease.
  • Physical inactivity:Physical inactivity is a risk factor for cognitive impairment.
  • Chronic conditions:Chronic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes are risk factors for cognitive impairment.
  • Lifestyle factors:Lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diet, excessive alcohol use, and depression are risk factors for cognitive disorders.
  • Head injury:Severe head injury can lead to the development of a cognitive disorder.
  • Exposure to toxins:Exposure to pesticides or toxins is a risk factor for cognitive impairment.
