What Is Dementia?

Dementia is not a single disease. Rather, it’s an umbrella term that represents a group of diseases and illnesses of neurological conditions affecting a person’s thinking, memory, reasoning, personality, mood, and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia.

Studies show about 5% to 8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia and as many as half of people 85 years of age and older have dementia. Known dementia risk factors include:

  • Age
  • Family history
  • Poor heart health
  • Previous brain injury

Dementia is the result of changes or damage in certain brain regions, causing neurons (nerve cells) and their connections to stop working properly. Dementia signs and symptoms can vary depending on the type of dementia and which areas of the brain are affected. They may include:

  • Difficulty remembering recent events
  • Repeating stories, comments, or questions
  • Forgetting where items were left or placing items in unusual spots
  • Not knowing the month, season, or year
  • Having trouble finding the right words
  • Experiencing a change in mood, behavior, or interest
  • Inability to remember new information or make decisions
  • Getting lost in familiar environments or neighborhoods
  • Forgetting the names of close friends or relatives
  • Experiencing hallucinations (seeing people or objects that aren’t there)
  • Lessening of rational thinking and ability to problem-solve
  • Worsening anxiety, frustration, confusion, depression, suspiciousness, and/or agitation

Currently, no treatment can cure or reverse dementia. However, there are treatment approaches that help to manage symptoms and slow the progression of the condition. Available treatments depend on the type of dementia but can include medications that temporarily improve or stabilize memory and thinking skills.
